WHAT IS THE ISSUE?
People aged 60+ are the fastest growing demographic in prison in England and yet their needs are the least understood. There is no official resettlement strategy for this group of people and limited resources to help them with the complicated process of readjusting to life on release, particularly for those who’ve served a long sentence and find themselves coming out to a world which has changed beyond all recognition.
WHAT DID WE DO?
We made a resource kit for use in prisons, called Get Ready to Go. This includes:
– a six-part audio soap opera which follows a number of characters who’ve recently left prison and are facing the challenge of building new lives for themselves. This can be used as a starting point for discussion and is accompanied by notes and helpful information for facilitators and discussion participants.
– ‘Real Voices’ – documentary audio material from people who’ve made the transition themselves.
